The soaring coronavirus infections in healthcare workers


New data published by Victoria’s health department has revealed over 100 health workers were infected with coronavirus at two Melbourne hospitals since the onset of the pandemic.

There have been 1,020 confirmed cases in healthcare workers in Melbourne and an extra 61 instances in regional Victoria in those who listed their main workplace as a hospital.

The numbers from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) reveal the Royal Melbourne Hospital had 139 cases, and St Vincent’s Hospital had 115 cases.

Another four hospitals had between 50 and 100 cases.

They comprise the Northern Hospital with 95 cases, Sunshine Hospital with 88, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Royal Park on 81 and Footscray Hospital with 66 cases.

There are currently 11 active instances of COVID-19 in hospital employees, all of them in Melbourne, and 46 cases in health workers in total.
